AUGUST 27, 2022 | Los Angeles
After two years in a virtual format, the Summit for Medical Students and Residents is returning to an in-person stage on Saturday, August 27 at the Renaissance LAX.
Join us as we talk about the future of family medicine and other current topics within the conference theme: What in the Health?
The Family Medicine Summit was established in 2008 to inspire a rising generation of family physicians and to provide an opportunity for exploring statewide training options. Now in its fourteenth year, the Summit continues to bring together medical students, family medicine residents and faculty in the same learning community. Each year, we convene some of California’s biggest thought leaders and enthusiastic voices in family medicine academics, leadership, policy and professional development for conversations you typically won’t hear anywhere else.

The Shelly Rodrigues Chief Resident Leadership Workshop is a two-part, skills-based workshop for California family medicine residents transitioning into their new roles as clinical leaders. On June 11th, chief residents met virtually to build an introductory foundation for the first 2.5-3 months of the chief’s year. These sessions included:
On August 27, the group will meet in-person for the second part of the workshop. Part 2 will move beyond the basics and will focus on deeper learning and application. Sessions will cover:
What’s so funny about mental health? As far as award-winning counselor and stand up comic, David Granirer is concerned, everything! In this hilarious presentation, David, who suffers from bipolar, will do comedy about his mental health journey and tell you about Stand Up For Mental Health, his award-winning program teaching comedy to people with mental health issues. You’ll get to see how he changes lives – one laugh at a time!
Through storytelling and humor, Dr. Connolly will provide recommendations for how we can stay healthy in the field of family medicine, and how we can keep the profession healthy and sustainable.
Student loans and finance education are not usually covered in medical school or residency; yet, these are important topics that impact every young physician. Being able to navigate this complex topic can determine the level of comfort and success in one's career.
Panelists: Manny Sardinha, DO (KP San Diego); Rebecca Lee, DO (KP Orange County); Jenny Chen, DO (John Muir); Andrew Torres, DO (Family Health Centers San Diego); Venus Esquivel, MD (RUHS)
This session is a panel discussion with residents who have successfully matched in Family Medicine Residency Programs (FMRPs) throughout California. The residents will discuss different types of FMRPs and tips for the application and interview process!
Medical students transitioning to interns are asked to assume new responsibilities without often explicitly stated expectations. This can lead to increased burn-out and feelings of being excluded, particularly for marginalized individuals. This session explores strategies for setting boundaries and preserving identities for rising residents.
This is a hands-on workshop that will explore the world of outpatient point-of-care testing. You will have a chance to rotate through FIVE stations, learning about diabetes screening and testing, sensory testing in the pediatric population, acute respiratory distress, the downfalls of pregnancy testing, the diagnostic wonders of a wet mount, and MORE.
Negotiating a first-time employment contract can be rather daunting. And, navigating the legal and compliance issues concerning physician employment is likely overwhelming. This session will break down the key aspects of physician employment contracts and identify the most common mechanisms designed to circumvent legal protections for physician employees.
The CAFP Residency Fair offers medical students the chance to learn about family medicine training in California. Prospective applicants can connect with program representatives for a closer look at program structure/curriculum, the application process, core values, residency life and more. Family Medicine Residency Programs interested in having a booth at the 2022 Summit Residency Fair can sign-up using the button below.
The CAFP-F Family Medicine Summit and Residency Fair is the only meeting that draws a cross section of medical students, residents and program staff from across California. As an exhibitor, you are granted full registration and access to all sessions to increase networking opportunities.
