Advocacy and Policy

Advocacy is the way for family physicians to learn about important health policy topics, legislation, and politics - and turn that knowledge into action by influencing the laws that affect patients and family physician practices.

Bill to Allow Nurse Practitioners to Practice Medicine Independently Heads to Governor

The Legislature passed AB 890 (Wood), allowing Nurse Practitioners to practice medicine without physician supervision. The bill now goes to the Governor to decide by the end of the month whether or not he will sign or veto.

Your CAFP advocacy team has done a wonderful job and our members have responded by calling legislators, writing emails and calling on relationships. Thank you to all of our members who wrote and called your legislator in opposition to AB 890 (Wood). It is important that Family Physicians visit the Governor’s website to register your opposition to the bill as soon as you are able.

Family Physicians work closely with Nurse Practitioners and truly value Nurse Practitioners as an important part of the care team. CAFP has also been clear how important it is to have educational and oversight standards in place before any professional is allowed to practice medicine independently.  Unfortunately, the bill does not require important safeguards around education and training, nor does it create incentives for Nurse Practitioners to practice in underserved areas.

Get Involved

Take the next step and share your voice as a family doctor to advocate for the future of family medicine. Join CAFP as we bridge the gap between health care and advocacy to make a difference in the profession of family medicine across the state.

Family Physicians Political Action Committee

The Family Physicians Political Action Committee (FP-PAC) is a bipartisan group dedicated to helping pro-family medicine candidates win election to public office and educating current legislators on the importance of family medicine. FP-PAC is the ONLY political organization whose sole mission is to promote family physicians and family medicine. We are the voice of family medicine in California, and we need your support.
