A 2021 report (From Crisis to Opportunity: Reforming Our Nation’s Policies to Help All Children Grow Up Healthy) released by a special project of the Robert Wood Johnson (RWJ) Foundation highlights a growing problem Family Physicians are facing in our practices: Childhood Obesity. This report, which highlights that now 1 in 6 children have obesity, offers targeted solutions for our current failing policies.
Addressing the contributing factors of food insecurity, structural racism, and Covid-19, solutions include strengthening federal policy, fighting for food justice, prioritizing health equity, and learning from more successful countries.
These solutions are aligned with our values and priorities as an Academy both at the state and the national level, and I encourage all family physicians to read this comprehensive report and find out where we might all take action.
