PBS Newshour: Invisible Scars - America's Childhood Trauma Crisis

Childhood trauma impacts millions of Americans and has far-reaching impacts, well into adulthood.  Those who experience trauma in childhood, resulting in toxic stress, often suffer from persistent and debilitating healthcare challenges as adults and can see dramatically lower life expectancies.

The PBS Newshour recently presented a multi-part series called “Invisible Scars:  America’s Childhood Trauma Crisis”.  The first three episodes have already aired and can now be viewed online:

Episode 1:  Childhood trauma impacts millions of Americans, and it’s having devastating consequences

Episode 2:  Breaking the cycle of childhood trauma in rural Montana

Episode 3:  The overwhelming impact of childhood trauma on Chicago’s West Side

These episodes provide a helpful background to the Family Medicine Initiative on Trauma Informed Care (FIT) workshops CAFP will host in 2021. The calendar of FIT workshops can be found on the CAFP website. If you have questions or would like to learn more about FIT, please contact Robin Heyden.
