A Call to Action: NP Scope Bill AB 90 will be Advancing

A bill to grant nurse practitioners (NPs) the right to practice medicine independently, AB 890 (Wood), will be heard in the Senate Appropriations Committee on Wednesday. CAFP has an Oppose Unless Amended position on the bill, based on policy created by CAFP’s Scope of Practice advisory group. CAFP’s policy articulates 11 principles that must be addressed in any legislative or regulatory proposal to allow health professionals to practice medicine independently of physician supervision. AB 890 still falls incredibly short on creating:

  • Consistent and sufficient educational standards
  • Proper regulation and oversight by the Medical Board
  • Ensuring care to underserved populations
  • Uniformity of requirements

Please call your State Senator and urge them to Oppose this bill unless it is amended to address these issues.
