As you adapt to confront COVID-19 in your practice and clinics, state and federal officials are attempting to adapt and waive various regulations and rules in light of the emergency. These changes include expanding access to care by easing HIPAA requirements (e.g., physicians can use any video platform to talk with their patients), eliminating Medicaid and Medicare co-pays and cost sharing for COVID-19 testing and treatment, and expanding billable telehealth services. Your CAFP and AAFP staff is monitoring new developments and sharing information members can trust. Several organizations are providing real time information to clinicians on these rapidly changing policies:
• AAFP has COVID resources specifically for family physicians.
• The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services released a factsheet for billing and public program coverage questions.
• The Center for Connected Health Policy is updating a real-time document for telehealth questions.
Governor Gavin Newsom has urged, BUT NOT REQUIRED, coverage for testing, treatment and telehealth services for commercially insured individuals. We will continue to seek relevant information and will alert you to any uniform changes in health plan policies.
