CAFP Welcomes New District VII and VIII Directors

Congratulations to Francis Chu, MD (District VII, Monterey, San Benito, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz) and Rob Assibey, MD (District VIII, Alameda, Calaveras, Contra Costa, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Tuolumne) who were recently elected to serve as District Directors on CAFP’s Board of Directors.

Dr. Chu was recently elected to serve as District VII Director on the CAFP Board. An active CAFP member since he was a medical student at UC Davis 33 years ago, Dr. Chu has seen the organization grow and change into a force for powerful change at the state level. “Clinically, I have had the pleasure of practicing full spectrum family medicine over the course of my career, including obstetrics, inpatient medicine, a variety of procedures, pain management, and behavioral medicine. I have served as faculty at the Kaiser Permanente (KP) Riverside Family Medicine Residency (FMR) for 18 years until becoming the inaugural Program Director at the KP San Jose FMR in 2016. The last 8 years have accelerated my involvement in the CAFP, as I believe that participation in organized medicine and advocacy is essential for our residents entering practice and I endeavor to model this engagement for them.”

Dr. Assibey, the APD at San Joaquin General Hospital, is the outgoing New Physician Director on the CAFP Board, and excited to begin his new role representing District VIII. “Throughout my career, I have witnessed firsthand the systemic disparities that persist in healthcare, disproportionately affecting marginalized and underserved communities. These inequities are not only unjust but also compromise the fundamental principle of healthcare as a human right. As a dedicated advocate for health equity, I am committed to addressing these disparities head-on, working tirelessly to ensure that every individual, regardless of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or any other factor, has access to quality and equitable healthcare services. Furthermore, I firmly believe that fostering a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion within our profession is paramount to achieving meaningful progress. Our strength lies in our collective diversity of experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds. By embracing and celebrating our differences, we can cultivate a more inclusive environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to contribute their unique talents to the advancement of family medicine.”

Dr. Estefania Way, Treasurer of the San Joaquin-Calaveras-Tuolumne Chapter, was elected to serve as District VIII Alternate.

Congratulations Francis, Rob, and Estefania, and thank you for your commitment to serve!
