The California Academy of Family Physicians would like to congratulate Andrea Banuelos-Mota, a fourth-year medical student at USC-Keck, for being selected by the Pisacano Leadership Foundation as a 2020 Pisacano Scholar.
These competitive scholarships are awarded to only six medical students in the U.S. who demonstrate a strong commitment to the specialty of Family Medicine. In addition, each applicant must show demonstrable leadership skills, superior academic achievement, strong communication skills, identifiable character and integrity, and a noteworthy level of community service.
The Pisacano Leadership Foundation, Inc. was created in 1990 by the American Board of Family Medicine in tribute to the founder and first Executive Director of the ABFM, Nicholas J. Pisacano, M.D. (1924-1990). Dr. Pisacano is acknowledged around the world as one of the leaders in the effort to recognize Family Medicine as a major specialty. His perseverance was finally rewarded in 1969 when the American Board of Family Medicine was designated as the sole agency responsible for the certification and recertification of family physicians.
Andrea has been an inspiring leader in both her medical school program and in the Academy. Over the past three years, she has been instrumental in the initiatives of CAFP’s Student Council – a statewide group that works to promote and advocate for family medicine interests. As she completes her final year of medical school, she continues to provide unparalleled inspiration and support to her peers. Her contributions range from FMIG and CAFP Board leadership, advocacy work and motivating her classmates to be engaged learners.
