Another COVID-19 casualty was the AAFP’s annual Chief Residents workshop – a meeting that brings together newly-selected chief residents from around the country for a workshop to prepare them for their new roles. In May, Shelly Rodrigues got a call from Eisenhower’s FMRP program director Scott Nass, wondering if the CAFP-F would be willing to do something to replace the AAFP’s event. The CAFP-F jumped at the chance, and with the support of an incredible master faculty and the members of the California Residency Network, launched a two-day, eight-hour workshop, covering a range of topics, with breakout rooms, pre-work, videos, and more than 75 chiefs participating.
The first four-hour session, June 20, included an opening and welcome by CAFP President David Bazzo, followed by workshops on the Kouzes and Posner leadership practices, conflict resolution and problem solving, a panel of outgoing chiefs hosted by CAFP-F president Marianne McKennett, and a closing address by Jay Lee. Day 2, June 27, offered workshop sessions on deliberate communication, building highly functioning teams, and wellness-resilience. The chiefs also have a SPARK community where they can share stories, ask questions, find tools/resources, and get advice from our master faculty members. The chiefs, who are paired with a partner outside their program, and faculty will work for the next year, as a collaborative tribe, to foster success!
