Positioning family physicians as health system leaders is strategically important for our specialty. The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) has approved a new subspecialty in Health Care Administration, Leadership, and Management (HALM). The American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) is a co-sponsoring board and will be offering a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) starting in 2024. The registration for the November qualifying examination is scheduled to launch on May 17 and will close on July 22, 2024.
Certification will be available to physicians with significant management and leadership responsibilities managing talent, operations, finances, and data in a wide variety of practice settings. The CAQ may be of interest to family physician leaders in community practice, hospitals, large medical groups, integrated health systems, academia, and health policy organizations.
By focusing on complex areas of systems and talent management with large bodies of literature, the CAQ will provide focused, enhanced learning opportunities to family physicians who want to improve their practice system while tailoring their continuing certification experience to important parts of their careers. The CAQ may also enable qualifying family physicians to grow in their leadership roles and provide portability of a leadership credential to different systems and settings. Strategically, ABFM hopes this CAQ will help enhance the positioning of family physicians as leaders in their health care organizations.
The first HALM qualifying examination, administered by the American Board of Emergency Medicine, will be offered online from November 11-26, 2024. A detailed examination blueprint can be found here.
