Program Highlights and/or Unique Curriculum Components (i.e. Fellowship Opportunities):
Nestled in the Inland Empire between Los Angeles County and San Bernardino County, the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center Family Medicine Residency has been serving its community for nearly 30 years. We cultivate full-spectrum physicians who receive robust training in outpatient and inpatient medicine, in addition to community medicine, geriatrics/palliative care, obstetrics, women’s health, and sports medicine. For those who want even more opportunities in specific areas, we offer track experiences which can be helpful in preparation for fellowships. In the last few years, we have created a dedicated research rotation that has resulted in many of our residents having opportunities to present at local and national conferences. We seek to create a family environment where the faculty have an open door, and are available to provide mentorship and support. We recognize that the rigor of residency warrants resources and provide time for a PGY1 support and PGY2/PGY3 support group.
Faculty Composition:
We seek to develop and retain faculty that reflect the diversity of our patient population. As a result, our faculty are fluent in several languages (e.g., Mandarin, Tagalog, Spanish, Arabic, Vietnamese). More than half of the current faculty completed their residency experience at Pomona Valley and decided to stay on to teach. While most of our faculty practice broad family medicine, several specialize and primarily see patients in areas like geriatrics, sports medicine or obstetrics.
Fun Facts:
  • It all started with a train crash. Pomona Valley Hospital was built in response to a train crash in 1899.
  • We are about an hour to the beach, an hour to the mountains, an hour to theme parks, and an hour to cultural events.
  • Throughout the year, we have two half days for resident team-building.
  • Every three years, we have a faculty/resident retreat with their families at the Lake Arrowhead UCLA facility.
