Congratulations to Ava Asher, MD, who will step in to the role of District X Director on CAFP’s Board of Directors after the May 2020 Board meeting. Ava has been elected to the position which will be vacated when current Director, Dr. Nate Hitzeman, completes his term. Dr. Asher will represent the Butte-Glenn-Tehama, Lassen-Plumas-Modoc, Sacramento Valley, and Shasta-Trinity County Chapters.
An active CAFP member since 2012, Ava also serves on the Board of the Sacramento Valley Chapter as Member-At-Large, where she has been a member of the team leading the revival of that local chapter. “Since 2015 I have worked as a family physician for two different FQHCs in Sacramento County while trying to bring attention to the dire condition of our safety net health systems, and introducing students to the variety of skills Family Physicians utilize during a single day of care in the FQHC world, as well as volunteering at a student-run-clinic. I am passionate about expanding the scope of family medicine to include stigmatized conditions rather than having them siloed (e.g. transgender medicine, family planning, substance use disorder, HCV, HIV), and committed to working outside flawed systems until there is one single system. Despite their proximity, the many counties of District X have different managed care models of Medi-Cal, which dramatically affects patients, providers, and medical students and residents. These factors are confusing. Although these are my passions, I understand that each FP practice setting has unique “pain points” and look forward to understanding those that affect my colleagues. By bringing to the attention of Family Physicians, students, and residents the causes of our broken safety net, I hope we can harness enthusiasm to find solutions for each of our concerns as a community of care providers and patient advocates.”
Dr. Erika Roshanravan, current Sacramento Valley Chapter President, was also elected to serve as District X Alternate.
Congratulations Ava and Erika, and thank you for your commitment to serve!
