Vaccine Boosters and FDA to Authorize Vaccines for Children

The CDC announced a recommended booster for all three available COVID-19 vaccines for certain populations.

For individuals who received:

  • a Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, the booster is recommended to those 65 years and older, and those who have underlying medical conditions.
  • the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, booster shots are recommended for those who are 18 and older and who were vaccinated two or more months ago.

CDC’s recommendations will now allow individuals to choose which booster vaccine they prefer. The booster no longer needs to match the previously administered vaccine type.

It is anticipated that the FDA will authorize the use of COVID-19 vaccine for 5-11 year olds when they meet on October 26th. Trials have shown the vaccine appears more than 90% effective in kids. The California Department of Public Health has worked with Pfizer to have sufficient vaccine available for pediatric vaccination for 5-11 year olds pending approval and hopes to start distribution in early November. You must be enrolled in myCAvax.
