Scholarships

CAFP Foundation Scholarships
Each year, the California Academy of Family Physicians Foundation (CAFP-F) offers scholarships for California medical students to attend the AAFP National Conference for Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students.  We are currently accepting applications for eight $800 scholarships to attend the 2011 event.  Click here for information on how to apply.

Annual Family Medicine Congressional Conference
The Annual Family Medicine Congressional Conference, sponsored by the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Organizations of Academic Family Medicine, offers full scholarships to two students and two family medicine residents every year.  Applications are available every spring at http://fmignet.aafp.org/.

National Health Service Corps
The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) is a scholarship program for students who will specialize in primary care and provide care in a medically underserved community. There are a couple options when choosing this route to help with medical debt. If you sign a contract as a medical student, the scholarship covers the cost of your medical education up front. You can also sign on after your residency when you are certain you will be practicing in a federally designated health professional shortage area. The NHSC will then pay back a specific amount of your loans for every year you continue to work in that area. For more information, click here or speak to your school's financial aid office.

National Student and Resident Conference
The National Conference is held annually in Kansas City, MO. More than 50 topics on clinical skills, leadership development and career planning are covered in workshops, procedural skills courses and musculoskeletal clinics during this four-day event. The National Congress of Student Members (NCSM), which convenes during the conference, offers the ideal forum for discussing issues and concerns facing medical students. The NCSM business sessions provide the opportunity to have a voice in AAFP policies and positions and to elect AAFP student leaders. Check out the National Conference Scholarship Award Program for funding opportunities here.

James G. Jones, MD Student Health Policy Scholarship
Administered by the AAFP Foundation, the James G. Jones, MD Student Scholarship Program supports attendance by one medical student to the annual Political Leadership Institute (PLI) of the American Medical Student Association. Each family medicine constituent chapter and chapter foundation are able to nominate one medical student who actively participates in chapter activities and who demonstrates an interest in health policy. A selection committee identifies one student from the nominations to attend the PLI.
