Eligibility and Selection Criteria

Applicants must be first-year students and attend a California medical school. Only students who are AAFP/CAFP members, or who have a pending membership application, are eligible. AAFP/CAFP student membership is only $15 and covers membership throughout all your medical school years. For an AAFP/CAFP student membership application, go to http://fmignet.aafp.org/cgi-bin/studentapp.pl, or contact Cody Mitcheltree at 415-345-8667.

Selection is based on the following criteria:

  • A strong desire to enter family medicine or a sincere interest in exploring family medicine
  • A commitment to community service and meeting the health care needs of communities
  • A strong desire to work with a family medicine physician

Scholarships will be awarded to 40 students. Approximately 15 students will be able to precept at rural sites.

Application Process
Applications will be reviewed by CAFP's Medical Student and Resident Affairs Committee. Applications are then ranked according to the committee's recommendations. The 40 highest scoring applicants are given scholarships for the program, with the rural slots going to the highest scorers who expressed an interest in rural placement.

Liability Insurance Coverage
Students must have liability protection to participate. Some schools provide bridge protection to all students, while other schools only do so when the student enrolls as a summer student. Some schools require summer enrollment for participation regardless of insurance status.  Check with your school on specific requirements.

Check with your school about tuition costs and available financial assistance. Your school may provide financial aid for the length of the program.
