Battle of the Residents FAQ


1. How many residents can participate on a team?

A team can be made of between two and four residents.

2. What year/level do the residents need to be?

Participants can be in any year of their residency. (PGY1-3)

3. When and where is the event taking place?

The Battle of the Residents will take place Saturday April 26th, 2008 from 5:00-7:30 pm at the San Francisco Marriott.

4. Is there preparation material recommended, if not, what subjects are covered in the competition?

There are no preparation materials recommended. Last year the questions covered a variety of topics from pediatrics to ob-gyn and sports medicine to diabetes. This year will be similar; a variety family medicine related topics will be covered.

5. What is the format of the competition?

Battle of the Residents will be a game show-style event resembling Jeopardy. The participants will answer in a question format.  The first team to buzz in will get to answer the question. Questions will be in the forms of both single best answer and multiple choice. Answering questions is a team effort.

6. How many residencies will be competing?

A maximum of 12 teams can participate this year.

7. Is there an entry fee?

Each team member must be registered for the ASA which is $25/resident. This will admit the resident into all ASA events taking place both Saturday and Sunday. For more information on the ASA please go to: http://www.familydocs.org/professional-development/ASA.php

8. Is there a prize?

Yes, there will be prizes. Last year the winning team received a Palm Pilot, a year subscription to e-pocrates and a $100 gift certificate to Amazon.com. There were four players on this team so each of the players took home all three of these prizes. Prizes have not been decided yet for this year's competition.

9. Is there any financial support for travel, food and lodge, or do we (the residency) come up with the money for the residents?

We do not provide financial support for the residents to attend. Some programs carpooled or some did the cheap $39 each way to SFO from LAX, etc.

10. How many questions are asked in the total competition?

Last year there were two rounds of regular play, with 25 questions per round and one final jeopardy question. This year the number of questions may change depending on the number of teams and rounds needed, but the rules of play will be sent to each team before the event.

11. How long is the event?

The Battle of the Residents will run from 5:00-7:30 p.m. on Saturday evening.

12. Will there be food and drinks at the Battle of the Residents?

Yes, CAFP will host a Pre-Game Tailgate Reception with snacks and beverages beginning at 5:00 p.m. and will run throughout the event for all spectators to enjoy.

13. Who holds the current Battle Title?

Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency Program is currently our reigning champion.
