Program Objectives

Family physicians are facing complex and pressing issues.  You need practical solutions and want proven evidence-based practices.  This year’s CAFP Annual Scientific Assembly offers both.  Your Committee on Continuing Professional Development works around the calendar using a thorough, professional needs assessment, to identify key education and practice gaps, and develop high quality, effective and creative educational initiatives.  The ASA is the launching pad for many of these initiatives.

This year’s Annual Scientific Assembly strives to further your clinical knowledge, keep you current with the latest advance in medicine, and ensure that you receive “use-on-Monday” solutions.

Special Guest Speaker:  Glen Stream, MD, AAFP President, will swear-in the 2012 officers and give the keynote address on the future of our specialty.

Lecture Hall Sessions and Workshops

Meeting your practice needs is the priority for this year’s Annual Scientific Assembly.  You’ll notice a few new additions to this year’s program, but you’ll enjoy the same high quality evidence- and case-based interactive sessions that are the hallmark of our ASA.  Here is a taste of the topics you can expect:

Diabetes:  The Musical will be on the main stage on Sunday – with the Sutter-Santa Rosa residents presenting their musical take on diabetes care.

A Look at the Aging Physician:  A panel discussion will tackle the aging of our workforce and how to address health concerns, legal issues, and take better care of ourselves.

Rheumatoid Arthritis, and the family physician’s role will discuss practical solutions for working with patients and sub-specialists for optimal care.

Fibromyalgia and new strategies for care will include practical information for family physicians and their care teams.

Have you heard about the opioid REMS?  We’ll provide you the latest information on the FDA’s requirements and the competencies all clinicians need to safely and effectively prescribe these drugs.

CAFP’s latest collaborative effort is The Evolution of Anticoagulation Management, and we will introduce the national initiative at the ASA.

Your Committee on Continuing Professional Development is also considering topics in infectious disease, ADHA, Skin Cancer, Contraception, COPD, Dementia, Gout, and more.

Also on tap: Saturday SAMS -- Childhood Illnesses and Sunday SAMS -- Care of the Vulnerable Elderly.  Space is limited in the SAMS sessions, so make sure to reserve your seat early.  There is a separate fee for these sessions.

In addition, your outgoing President Carol Havens, MD will pass the gavel to incoming President Steve Green, MD (pictured) as AAFP President Glen Stream, MD swears in all the 2012-13 officers.  FP-PAC President Carla Kakutani, MD will present the “Sacramento Report.”

SAMS and Other Sessions

Two Group SAMs Sessions:  The Family Medicine Spectrum: We will have two group SAMS sessions, one on Saturday and one on Sunday.  During these sessions you’ll walk through the Self-Assessment Module, answer the questions, practice a patient simulation, and leave with Phase 1 (the SAM) completed and credited.  We’ll handle your registration with the ABFM and report completion of the SAM.   There will be an additional $89 registration fee for each Group SAMS; lunch and materials will be included, and space will be limited.  The Group SAMs will run opposite the main stage afternoon sessions.  This year Mark Dressner, MD, will lead Saturday’s Childhood Illnesses and Michelle Quiogue, MD and Peter Khang, MD will tackle Sunday’s The Vulnerable Elderly.  Register for both SAMs for only $160!

Note: Please read this update from the American Board of Family Medicine on "Board Eligibility."

RECS, LECS, HIT, EHRs and Meaningful Use:  Oh, My!  Are you preparing to tackle the HITECH program?  Are RECs, LECs, and the other acronyms becoming part of your vocabulary?  Many family physicians have made these decisions and are using technology to improve the business and clinical sides of their practices.  Many of you, however, have not yet made the leap, and have told us you want assistance.  We hear you … and we’re making space at this year’s ASA to provide you the information to help you ask the right questions.  We can’t make the decision for you, but we can certainly help equip you with the tools to evaluate your options.  The Technology Roundtables will be open Sunday afternoon for no extra charge.

Special Events

CAFP Foundation Silent Auction:  This will be our 8th Annual Foundation Silent Auction with items generously donated by CAFP members and partners.  This event has proven to be a favorite – with heated bidding competition.  All proceeds from the Silent Auction support Family Medicine Interest Group activities on California’s medical school campuses.

Battle of the Residents and New Physicians Social:  The 2011 Battle of the Residents received some of the Assembly’s highest marks – it was both educational and fun, and the New Physicians Social was a great place for young family physicians to meet before the Battle.  The combo will be held at 5:30-7:00 pm on Saturday, and open to all members.  Come join in the fun!

CAFP Computer Camp:  Computers and Internet access will be available for accessing Maintenance of Certification SAMs, and other CME activities.  You’ll be able to check email, print syllabus materials, and complete your meeting evaluations.

Friends and Family Room:  We heard favorable responses to the 2011 Friends and Family Room, so have extended the space for 2012.  The family room is an informal room, with table top displays, couches for conversation, light refreshments, and a social atmosphere ... a place where you can meet with representatives from the non-profit organizations, agencies, and service groups you work with during the year.  We've reserved space for 20 of our “family” members.  The Friends and Family Room will be open Saturday-Sunday for no extra charge.

Hotel and Travel

This year’s meeting will be held at the Esmeralda Renaissance, Indian Wells, CA, close to Palm Springs.  The property is in a beautiful desert location which in April should be in full bloom.  The hotel has three restaurants on-site, including a pool side cafe, has a spa for guests and is next door to a beautiful public golf course.  It is the perfect place for a conference, getaway or family gathering.

The CAFP has negotiated a $169/night (single/double) room rate, with Club/Concierge level upgrades available.  The rate is good from April 20-23 for those who may wish to arrive early, or stay after the meeting.  By staying at the meeting hotel, you help CAFP reduce rising hotel attrition costs and continue to offer affordable CME.

Make your hotel reservation (March 28 is the cut-off date) here.

To see hotel details, visit the Renaissance Esmeralda website.

CME and COI

Continuing Medical Education:  The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education accredits CAFP to provide continuing medical education for physicians.  This meeting is sponsored for 17 AMA PRA Category 1 TM credits.

The ASA will be reviewed and approved by the American Academy of Family Physicians for Prescribed credit as well.

Conflict of Interest and Conflict Resolution Policy:  CAFP has a long-standing policy in place to address declaration and notification of interest.  We require staff members, officers, board and committee members, curriculum development team members, master faculty members, and speakers to complete a Disclosure of Interest statement.  ACCME policy requires identification, management and resolution of conflict, and the CAFP has a process in place to meet these requirements.  Questions?  Please contact Shelly Rodrigues, CAE.

Register today for the early bird fee of just $119 ($149 after March 1).

The room block is now open at the Renaissance Esmeralda.  Reserve your room now! We’ll see you April 21-22, 2012!

For more information, call CAFP at 415-345-8667.

Attention exhibitors: If your organization is interested in a space in our "Friends and Family Room," please download this registration form and return it to CAFP.
