Family physicians and their patients are at the heart of California’s health care system. Together, they weave an incredibly rich tapestry of health. Describing the full spectrum of family medicine is a challenge, but the story is an inspiring one.

Modern family physicians experience almost limitless opportunities when choosing where to practice and what kind of work to do. This publication was compiled to help explain the diversity and depth of family medicine. It will provide medical students and residents with a resource to use in defining their career goals and practice options. It will help currently practicing physicians identify their priorities and opportunities when considering a change.

Our biggest challenge in putting this publication together was choosing just eight practices to highlight. Every practice we looked at was worthy of inclusion. We would like to thank all the physicians and their staffs who participated in this project. Their sense of calling and dedication to family medicine has shown through every interaction with their patients — providing communities throughout California with evolving, innovative, exceptional health care in the context of the family.
