CAFP’s continuing medical education/continuing professional development mission is to enhance and improve the quality of patient care by maintaining, developing and increasing the competence, knowledge, skills and professional performance of family physicians, their practice teams and other primary care physicians — within California and nationally. International audiences will also have access to internet-based activities.

CAFP is pleased to offer its members, and other primary care professionals, valuable online educational resources on a variety of clinical and non-clinical topics. These activities are developed by CAFP’s Committee on Continuing Professional Development and reviewed and, where appropriate, approved for Prescribed credit by the American Academy of Family Physicians and AMAPRA Category 1 CreditTM by CAFP.

The American Board of Family Medicine's (ABFM) Family Medicine Certification Program (formerly known as MOC) is the means by which the ABFM continually assesses Diplomats. The following will provide a brief description of each component.

The Family Medicine Clinical Forum, CAFP’s largest CME meeting, offers interactive formats, concurrent CME sessions and unique networking opportunities that translate learning into action. Our 2018 Forum will take place in Monterey, CA on April 13-15. Check back for more updates!

CAFP’s newest initiative, End of Life Conversations, is an education and outreach program focused on integrating end-of-life, advanced care planning and palliative care into family medicine and primary care practices. Our goal is to increase family physicians’ and FM teams’ familiarity with advance care planning and palliative care services and with conversations around prognosis.

The CAFP and CAFP Foundation are pleased to support leadership development activities for family physicians, FM residents and medical students. Leadership development opportunities range from two established programs, CME Leaders Institute and Ready to Lead: Physician Leaders in Integrated Health Care Settings to skills development workshops at the All Member Advocacy Meeting, seminars and webinars, the Leadership Councils for both Students and Residents and more. CAFP has been a proponent of collaborative education for more than 15 years. Early projects included work in osteoarthritis, diabetes, immunizations and overactive bladder. As an Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) accredited provider, the CAFP subscribes to the 22 criteria for education and is proud of its extensive experience in ACCME Criterion 20: “The provider builds bridges with other stakeholders through collaboration and cooperation.”
