CAFP Enjoys Success at AAFP Congress of Delegates

CAFP's delegation to the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Congress of Delegates was actively engaged on 26 resolutions considered at the October 12-14 meeting in Boston, and, with the help of other states' delegations, achieved excellent outcomes on all of them.  CAFP sponsored or co-sponsored two resolutions - one to help economize on the cost of campaigning for higher office at AAFP, and the other calling on AAFP to condemn the murder of member George Tiller, MD.   The other 24 resolutions ranged from no-loan financial aid for students selecting primary care, to support for a new compensation system, to repealing the Hyde Amendment (which was referred to the Board after the Congress defeated the Reference Committee recommendation that it not be adopted).  The Reference Committee on Advocacy also recommended "do not adopt" the most important resolved portions of several resolutions regarding Dr. Tiller's murder, but the Congress amended the resolution requiring AAFP to issue a statement condemning  Dr. Tiller's murder and making it AAFP policy that acts of violence against physicians engaged in the legal practice of medicine also be condemned.

The Congress adopted a recommendation that AAFP support expansion of the Primary Care Extension Program, an idea developed by CAFP member Kevin Grumbach, MD, which would create a program for physicians similar to the US Department of Agriculture's Extension Service for America's farmers (Area Health Education Centers undertake some of the activities of the Extension Service now, according to witnesses).
