Nearly 250 physicians received loan repayment awards of up to $300,000 this week as part of the CalHealthCares Program. The program will disburse $330 million over five years using Proposition 56 funds. CAFP contributed to the design and administration of the program, lending our expertise in primary care workforce policy to the program's Advisory Council, ensuring physicians most likely to serve underserved populations received grants. Of the 247 physicians who received awards, 48 of them (nearly 20 percent of all applicants) are family physicians. Awardees are required to maintain a patient caseload of at least 30 percent Medi-Cal patients for five years. Nearly 1,300 physicians and dentists applied for the awards.
