Each year, the CAFP Foundation funds first-year medical students to explore careers in family medicine through CAFP's Summer Family Medicine Preceptorship Program. Participating students spend four weeks precepting full-time with a California family physician. Forty $1,200 scholarships are awarded to students on a competitive basis.
Family Medicine Research Externship Grants
Funded jointly through the CAFP Foundation and AAFP Foundation, this student program offers second- and third-year medical students an opportunity to work with a practicing or academic family physician to conduct clinical or educational research.
Leadership Opportunities
CAFP provides opportunities for California student leaders to coordinate state wide activities for medical students interested in family medicine. Through the California Student Association of Family Medicine (CSAFM), officers serve as student advocates to the CAFP's Congress of Delegates, AAFP's National Congress of Family Medicine Students, CAFP Board of Directors, and CAFP Medical Student and Resident Affairs Committee. The CSAFM also helps organize a Family Medicine Conference for Medical Students each year.
Educational Activities
AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students
AAFP's annual event represents the largest gathering of medical students and family medicine residents in the country. Highlights include educational workshops, procedural skills workshops, the National Congress of Student Members, and an exhibit hall featuring over 450 exhibits, including family medicine residency programs from all over the U.S.
Family Medicine Conference for Medical Students
Each fall, the CSAFM and the Residents of the California Academy of Family Physicians (R-CAFP) plan a conference especially designed for California medical students. Accompanied by the residency fair and hands-on workshops, the event offers a unique opportunity to explore family medicine.
Family Medicine Interest Groups (FMIG) at each medical school in California provide a network for students interested in family medicine. CAFP sponsors FMIG activities including informal dinners with practicing family physicians, educational forums, and community service projects at participating schools.
